about

Ghana is a rebellious music of survival, its passion reflecting the heartbeat of the Maltese people and their endurance through the years as a nation. This poetic music tradition, which evokes an Arabic past, features improvising rhyming duels similar to rap music. Captured in rare field recordings, Arabic modal scales and European chord progressions intermix freely. In Spirtu Pront, the most popular and developed form of Ghana, the singers typically contradict and argue with one another.

The great majority of the Maltese nation sings, often at religious and communal feasts, and now and again in the wine shops frequented by ghanejja as they rejoice in their music-which had a reputation until recently for being on the outside of society. The survival of Ghana is at stake, as we hear in these poignant and gritty recordings.
